3 Reasons Your Website Needs User Testing

Written by Lynton | 08/22/2014

User testing is a quick way to show users your wireframes, designs or development site to get feedback. There are several tools out there that will help you set up user testing. A couple of our favorites are usertesting.com and usabilityhub.com.

For an inbound marketer, quick feedback with user testing can help you avoid costly mistakes with your website. Now let’s talk about some reasons why you might need user testing.

1. Internal disagreement about what users want

Do you have a lot of theories about what users want from your website? It’s pretty common to be in disagreement about the layout or functionality with a particular page template. User testing is an easy solution to get answers. Run a test with two pages side by side or ask users to complete a specific task.

2. Out of ideas to improve conversion rates

Stuck with a lot of low performing landing pages with no ideas what to improve? User testing can help you. Be sure to keep your research questions vague. Users will give all sorts of input. Tackle and test with the low hanging fruit first.

3. Get design or navigation input

User testing can help you confirm that a design concept exudes positive brand traits like “trustworthiness” or “expertise”.

Another test case might include confirming your navigation menu labels are clear enough. Simply ask users to find a page within one of your categories to make sure your content buckets are very clear.

There are a lot of research approaches to take, and user testing may be one of many options. Need help figuring out how to set up user testing, A/B testing or some other form of research? We have a team of inbound marketing experts eager to help.
